What is your view on those Dateline internet predator sting operations?

Levi F asked:

You see those specials all the time where Dateline gets together with a local law enforcement agency and gathers up a bunch of people who were online trying to get together with minors. And lately, local news networks have been getting in on the ratings game too by having their own specials.

But how do you view these operations? Are these people getting what they deserve? Or do you view that as entrapment and are the police going too far? Should these men be paraded on national television or are the arrests enough? And how severe should punishment be for intent? Less, equal or more severe than some other sexually based crimes where something actually happens?

What’s with chat room girls?

sonyack asked:

Yesterday on CBS online news, there was an item about the cops catching the vampire guy and charging him with rape and sodomy. He hung out in a chat room about vampires and lured girls to cemetaries at night and did his stuff.

What kind of person meets somebody online and then goes at night to a cemetary to meet him? What is in their minds? I mean, even if they never heard about online predators?

Could this be dangerous?

tina18 asked:

My friend has an online boyfriend and she recently told me about meeting him in real life. They have exchanged phone numbers and call eachother, but I’m still concerned about it due to all the online predators in the news. What should I say to her to make sure shes safe? Or should I just let them meet eachother? Help!

myspace question?

mee (: asked:

I entered one of those contest sites on myspace.
it only have like.. 700 friends
i’m not supposed to give people i don’t know my picture
but i couldn’t resist
i want to see if i’m pretty enough to win something.
even though I told them to take it down after the contest, weather i win or not, i still feel a little bit guilty cause i’m not supposed to and i’m scared of online predators.
but i really want to do it too, cause i think i’m ugly and i think it will help boost my confidence if i see that people vote for me, and really boost it if i actualy win.
should i tell her to take it down so i don’t feel guilty?
or so i just keep it up.

What steps can parents take to protect their kids while online. Im not looking for anything too technical. I already know material but i need to reference something. Does anyone have any links to articles i might be able to use as a reference?

Can you help me rearrange this into a stronger persuasive essay?

Hayl X asked:

In 2008, a high school teacher named Mrs.Boyd decided to look into Internet networking sites like Facebook and Myspace. Her research provided that users of the sites “are using social network sites to build community, connect with their peers, and through it, they are showcasing all of the good, the bad and the ugly of today’s teen life.” Just like the world we live in, this internet world has social classes. There are scholars and dropouts, rich and poor, kids who are popular and kids who just want to be. And just like in our ‘real’ world, there are people who are out to cause trouble.

Sometimes, these online trouble makers become real life criminals. They are the kidnappers, rapists and stalkers the media loves to talk about. They always claim that websites are to blame. In reality, these websites shouldn’t be blamed for the careless and thoughtless actions made by certain individuals in our world today. Myspace was not created to ruin or jeopardize peoples’ lives, it was created so people can communicate with their family and friends online. There are many different ways to have a myspace, stay safe, and prevent meeting these online predators, But unfortunately there are some individuals out there who abuse the purpose of Myspace, and give it a bad name. But when you really look at the facts about this website, there are more good qualities than bad.

So lets make sure we are completely safe. Lets ban myspace, facebook- maybe the internet all together. Let’s stay inside our houses at all times. We can chainlock our doors and bar our windows. We can stop doing anything that could put us in danger and we can keep these criminals leading our lives. No, that would be stupid.

Instead lets be smart. Lets live our lives but most importantly lets stay as safe as possible while doing it. As in life, online communities have more than just a few ways to do this. When making a myspace, it is or should be very clear that you shouldn’t put any info to personal on your page, and if you do then you have the option to make your myspace private. This private option allows only your friends to see your page, if you do not accept someone they are unable to access your page. They also block common search terms that most predators use to find their victims. These are just to name a few of the safety options Myspace offers. Donna Rice Hughes, the president of Enough is Enough(a group that is working to make the internet safer for kids), gives her opinion: “ The technology and child safety software and policies that they’ve put into Myspace have made it safer. It has learned how to protect kids from naiveté.

Before Myspace there were chat rooms, before chat rooms there were telephones and before that predators found their victims the old fashioned way. No matter where you go, perverts will still be perverts and stalkers will still be stalkers. There has always been evil in the world and there always will be. The internet doesn’t make criminals, genetics and the society we live in does. That is the same society that users of these websites live in. So how can we blame websites for our problems? Are they forcing people in engage in inappropriate actions? It is time to for people stand up and responsibilities for their own actions.

i have good idea but i feel likes its all over the place, how can i rearrange it to make it stronger?

Pre-Teens and the Internet?

razor_sharp_redhead asked:

What is your opinion about pre-teen aged children using the internet?
Should a well-informed, educated and trustworthy pre-teen child use the internet with adult supervision?
Or should parents ride on the side of caution and not allow children to explore the world of the internet because of the dangers of online predators and other dangers that lurk on the web?

What are your thoughts?
